Welcome Weekend FAQ

Classes begin on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023.

The bookstore has this information ready for you a few weeks before classes begin. Enter the bookstore’s website and locate the "Textbooks" link on the page. Have your class list ready; all books can be found by class number and section.

You may purchase books online before school begins and pick them up at the Bruin Store during the first week of classes. Or, you can come to school and purchase your books at the Bruin Store. The first day of each class professors will pass out their syllabi and should inform you of any other required supplies for class.

You can also access textbook information from your smartphone on iGFU.

Welcome Weekend begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25, for new students.

You cannot move on to campus before Welcome Weekend, unless you are a pre-approved early arriver. You will receive a confirmation from housing if you are pre-approved.

Unfortunately that’s not an option this year. You’ll need to bring everything with you when you move onto campus.

Move-in during Welcome Weekend marks an exciting and important moment for residential students at George Fox. To honor this tradition, while also making move-in a smooth experience, all incoming students will be assigned a move-in time slot.

During the first week of August, residents will be sent information to their George Fox email address regarding their move-in time slot and the check-in process. If you have an important time constraint and need to be assigned to a specific time, email housing@georgefox.edu your preferred time.

Upon arrival, new students and their families will drive to the student's living area to begin the check-in process. Students will be able to be checked in by Admissions, University Housing, and Residence Life staff at their living area.

When you pull up to your residence hall, faculty, staff and students will assist you in unloading your car(s). We are excited for your arrival and the start of a new year!

Payment is due Monday, Aug. 21. The financial aid office will disburse to accounts the Friday prior, Aug. 18. Payment of the difference is due prior to move-in unless a payment plan has been approved.

Students who need to make monthly payments toward their balance should contact the Office of Student Accounts early in August to make arrangements. The first monthly payment must be received online by the Aug. 15 due date. Pre-payments can be made now to lower the monthly amount due beginning in August.

If a plan is not in place on Aug. 15 but is needed, one may be requested at that time; however, the first payment will be due prior to move-in, so we strongly urge students to plan ahead so they don’t miss out on any of the Welcome Weekend activities.

For more information, check your George Fox mailbox. Student registration triggers an informational email from student accounts with individual account information and payment plan options.

At this time, we do not anticipate any limitations on guests during move-in. Guests may also be in common spaces within housing locations. RAs and residence life staff will be present during move-in to respond to any questions or concerns that may come up.

Once you have completed the check-in process, you will be able to park your vehicle in any available parking lot near your living area. You can view this map for nearby locations. Directions will be given to you at your living area move-in. If you are a commuter, you can go directly to the info booth on the quad for further direction.

Yes! Please mail boxes to campus. If you choose to mail items to campus, please review the instructions from Mail Services. When you read through them, be sure to note the correct street address that corresponds with your campus mailbox number.

There are no initial costs for students during Welcome Weekend, and there is no attendance fee for families and guests. Guests wishing to purchase tickets for Friday's dinner are invited to visit our Meal Purchase page. Student meals are covered by their meal plan beginning with Friday dinner. No persons will be admitted for meals without tickets.

You are welcome to be on campus; however, we encourage families to bid farewell on Friday after the 9:15 p.m. candlelight farewell event, unless you have a scheduled appointment in the Stevens Center with student services or are needing to make payment arrangements in the Office of Student Accounts. Student mandatory sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Meal plans begin Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, with the dinner meal.

After you have logged into the Housing & Community Life Portal, look for a box on the right side called “Your Information.” Your building, floor and room number will all be displayed after “Location.”

Log into the Housing & Community Life Portal and select “Housing Intent” from the main menu. Enter the application and navigate to the “Application Status” page. Then, scroll down to “Booking Summary” and you will be able to view location and roommate information.

During the summer, the Undergraduate Admissions Office will have access to a sample room in a first-year residence hall that can be viewed by request or on the regular campus tours taking place each weekday. Check here for current tour times.

Find out details about your room on the individual residence hall's room page (room dimensions, closet size, what items are in the room, etc.).

It is recommended that students bring extra-long twin-size sheets (Twin XL).

Limited pets are allowed on campus. Students are allowed to have fish in a small aquarium. All other pets are not allowed on campus.

Many students on campus have vehicles, so it is usually easy to find a ride with a friend or roommate. However, most things in town are within walking distance from campus. George Fox is right in the middle of Newberg, splitting the old town from the new. Feel free to take a nice walk around town with friends.

Unfortunately, there is no service run by the school to transport students to and from the university. The website does have a few resources as to other services from outside companies to help provide transportation to and from campus.

We encourage you to attend a church in the area. There are many local churches to choose from in Newberg, the surrounding communities, or Portland. While students attend chapel on campus, it is a different experience than a weekly church service, and we believe the opportunity to worship with Christians outside the campus community is very valuable.

Chapel begins for the year on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023, in Bauman Auditorium.
