Program Overview

George Fox students may apply to study in Quito, Ecuador, for one semester in the Living and Learning Quito Semester Abroad program. Quito, the nation’s capital, is located in the Andes Mountains and is the highest capital city in the world, at an elevation of more than 9,000 feet. The historic Old Town is a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world, featuring the Andean mountains, the tropical Amazon rainforest, and the unique Galapagos Islands. The Quito semester is part of the Living and Learning Program, affiliated with Youth World. Living and Learning also hosts a program in Rome, Italy.

Course Content

You can take a variety of classes, including Spanish language courses, interdisciplinary seminars about Latin culture, history, ecology, politics, economics, and religion. You will also have the opportunity to serve in hands-on internships. There is no language requirement.

Internships

Living and Learning Quito offers several internship opportunities, including in the fields of communications, information technologies, graphic design and digital media, business, intercultural studies, education, outdoor leadership, youth and worship ministries, social work, family and human psychology, pre-med, and nursing.

Excursions

You will travel throughout Ecuador to visit the Amazon rainforest, Andean volcanoes, and the Galapagos Islands.

Housing

You will live in apartments and cook for yourself. You’ll spend five weeks in homestays with Ecuadorian families.

Program Fees & Eligibility

You pay your regular George Fox tuition and room and board and continue to receive all of your financial aid. Due to the high cost of some programs, an additional fee may be charged. You are responsible for round-trip airfare. There also may be an additional charge for a visa. The fee does include emergency travel insurance.

To apply, you must be a full-time undergraduate student with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
