Scholars' Semester in Oxford England

Oxford

Program Overview

In conjunction with the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, George Fox students can participate in the Scholars' Semester in Oxford (SSO). Students enrolled in the SSO are granted registered visiting student status. This gives them full access to the 119 libraries with more than 11 million books, university lectures, as well as athletic teams and social organizations.

Course Content

You will select a primary and secondary tutorial course that is typically one-on-one with an Oxford professor. You will also take an undergraduate research seminar and Selected Topics in British Culture lecture course, for a total of 17 credit hours.

Credits

Because students remain enrolled at George Fox while participating in SSO, 17 hours of academic credit is awarded by George Fox. However, Wycliffe Hall will have final authority over all admissions, academic programs, and student behavior.

Housing

You have two options: the North Wing of Wycliffe Hall, a large college residence north of the center of town and a 10-minute walk to the center of town, or The Vines, a late-Victorian mansion on the crest of Headington Hill, a 35-minute walk into Oxford city center or a five-minute walk to the nearest bus stop.

Students typically will room with one to two other students, however there are a few one-person rooms. You cook for yourself. Since SSO does not include meals, your George Fox account will be credited for a full meal plan. More information about SSO housing.

Program Fees & Eligibility

You pay your regular George Fox tuition and room and board and continue to receive all of your financial aid. Due to the high cost of some programs, an additional fee may be charged. You are responsible for round-trip airfare. There also may be an additional charge for a visa. The fee does include emergency travel insurance.

To apply, you must be a full-time undergraduate student with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher in your major (this is not an overal cumulative GPA). Note that this GPA requirement is higher than for other George Fox programs.

Application Process

Applying to the program is a two-step process, requiring that you complete both a George Fox and external site application. Visit the Application Page to get specific details. Once you’ve completed the George Fox application, we will provide you with information to apply to the Oxford, England, program.
