      What is Sociology?

Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts.

At George Fox University, our students gain a broad liberal arts education. The Sociology major specifically prepares and equips students to:

      • analyze human relationships from a sociological perspective
      • develop the theoretical, technical, and statistical skills necessary for asking and answering sociological questions
      • enhance awareness of relationships between personal events and the structure of societies
      • prepare students for admission into graduate programs
      • complete a research project with guidance from the professor; students may also choose to complete a field internship careers
      •

      Our Mission

The sociology major prepares students to cultivate skills in critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and statistical analysis not only to analyze social phenomena but to serve the world with a keen mind and a loving heart.

Prospective students can get information about our sociology major on our undergraduate admissions site.

      Caleb Burns (2019)
“Sociology has opened my eyes to the greatest disparities in our society and equipped me with both quantitative and qualitative research skills to lead others to make a difference. Through every class that I have taken within my major, I have gained the knowledge necessary to excel in Law school and my future career.”

Carly Fisher-Francis (2019) “Studying sociology helps me deepen my passion in animal welfare and understand how society views animals. I now feel confident going into the job field knowing that my research skills developed through my coursework as a sociology major will transfer over nicely into helping people and animals in our society.”

      Isaak Swan (2019)
“Relationships with faculty defined my experience in the sociology program. I was believed in, I was encouraged, and I was challenged to grow. They supported my work on my senior thesis and even invited me to join in their research. Without their input and energy, I would not be the person I am now.”
