Politics Majors' Activities

The politics major at George Fox University requires that students complete an internship, and we encourage students to apply for external programs, grants, and activities. Professors work with students to find internships and programs tailored to their specific interests. Many students spend a semester studying abroad at a Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) program. Below are a few examples of internships and programs that politics majors have done, are doing, or will do.

Fall 2019

Kate Cvancara participated in the prestigious First Liberty Fellows Program.

Summer 2018

Christian Hooper will intern at Oregon Right to Life.

Ben Fox and Anna Sovereign will work with the Mike Kennedy for Senate campaign in Utah.

Spring 2018

Louise Bonn will intern with Oregon Representative Dallas Heard.

Fall 2017

Josh Cayetano was awarded the  Steinfeldt Peace Scholarship.

Ian Snively participated in the American Studies Program.

Brianna Martin-Ortega was the Educational Programs intern for George Fox University's Spiritual and Intercultural Life (SpIL) Office for the 2017-18 school year.

Summer 2017

Joshua Cayetano interned for  Providence: A Journal of Christianity and American Foreign Policy  in Washington, D.C.

Emily-Lynn Warren was accepted in the Koch Policy Fellows Program. She spent the summer conducting research on religious accommodations under the direction of Mark David Hall.

Rachel Alexanian interned as the Legal & Oregon Policy Intern for Freedom Foundation in Olympia, WA.

Spring 2017

Outstanding Senior Award 2017Chelsea McCombs was awarded the Outstanding Senior award in Political Science.

Sierra Brambila was awarded the C.W. Perry Award. This award recognizes students who are making a tremendous impact on our George Fox campus and in the surrounding community.  

Taylor Dick interned for a semester with an Oregon State Legislator.

Emily-Lynn Warren and Josh Cayetano studied abroad this semester in Amman, Jordan with the Middle East Studies Program through CCU.

Fall 2016

Joshua Cayetano was the recipient of the US Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

David Guild served as Deputy Field Director for Dennis Richardson for Secretary of State.

Larisa Shkopu interned for the Oregon State House of Representatives under Jim Weidner.

Summer 2016

Josh Cayetano received a Richter's Scholar grant to study the role of political legitimacy in states emerging from violent conflict, specifically in occupied Iraq and Japan. 

Rachel Alexanian interned as the Legal and Oregon Policy Intern for Freedom Foundation in Olympia, Washington.

Rochelle Owen was a Congressional District Office Intern for U.S. Representative Greg Walden.

Fatima Chacon Martinez interned for the Multnomah County Election Division.

Spring 2016

Morgan Early interned for Wayne Krieger, State Representative District 1, Gold Beach, OR.

Kaitlyn Groshong interned for David Kilada, the Deputy Political Director of Oregon Right to Life.

Josh Cayetano interned as a VCM volunteer with the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization.

Katelyn Zimmerer interned for Sam Carpenter's US Senate campaign.

Fall 2015

Chelsea McCombs interned for the City of Newberg, City Attorney.

Summer 2015

Josh Cayetano and Emily Lynn Warren participated in the Philos Leadership Institute.  This four week, all expenses paid program, involves two weeks of study in New York City and two weeks in Israel.

Emily Lynn Warren was also invited to a three day boot camp in Washington, D.C. with FreedomWorks.

Stephen Partin was a grant research intern with Allies In Change.

Kaylie Moffat interned with Sandy City Hall.

Jenny Newman served as Student Activist Coordinator for Amnesty International in Oregon both Fall 2014 and Spring 2015.

Sierra Brambila interned for the State Representative Ken Moore Campaign. 

Evan Hoffman interned for the Ryan Howard Campaign.

Summer 2014

Tyler Bowman interned for Mead Treadwell for U.S. Senate (Alaska).

Joel Grey interned for the Cascade Policy Institute.

Lexxs Sutton continued her internship for Representative Earl Blumenauer in his Portland office.

Kayl Burrow interned for the law firm of Eric C. Harris in Missouri.

Jenny Newman was an Organizing Intern with Amnesty International's San Francisco Office.

Evan Hoffman interned for Ryan Howard, candidate for Oregon State Legislature.

Spring 2014


Elisabeth Tissell Outstanding Senior Award Elisabeth Tissell was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award.

SCIO (Scholarship & Christianity in Oxford) reported that Jennifer Newman was awarded a de Jager prize for exceptional performance during the fall semester 2013 of the Scholars' Seminar in Oxford.

Taylor Dick, Chelsea McCombs, Tyler Bowman, and Christopher Parks interned for Jason Conger for U.S. Senate.

Lexxs Sutton interned for Representative Earl Blumenauer in his local Portland office.

Fall 2013

Elisabeth Tissell participated in the CCCU's Semester in Spain program.

Summer 2013

Phoebe Calipjo interned for the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for Lihue, Hawaii.

Iishan Low interned for Wong Chen, a member of the Malaysian Parliament.

Jerika Hutchinson served as an intern with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C.

Sergio Cisneros was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award.

Iishan Low and Elisabeth Tissell were two of nine students awarded the 2013-2014 Steinfeldt Peace Scholars award.

Preston Mann interned for State Representative John Davis.

Elisabeth Tissell interned for Oregon Center for Christian Voices.  

Sergio Cisneros interned with KUNP Univision.

Cheldon Chriestenson interned for Newberg Mayor, Bob Andrews. 

David Spears interned for State Senator Bruce Starr.
